Traditional medicine is interdisciplinary knowledge and shared different fields of knowledge such as medicine, anthropology, phytology, etc and considered as one of the precious heritage of Islamic-Iranian Civilization. The Iranian founders of traditional medicine are prominent scientists such as Avicenna, Razi, Jorjani and…whose studies and researches affected the medicine in a world.

Activities of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in the field of Traditional Persian Medicine are improving by Research Center for Traditional Medicine and History of Medicine and the department of traditional medicine. As a result of these activities, we hope to improve the capabilities of the national health system and serve the noble people of Iran.

About Us

In October 2009, upon receiving a go-ahead from the Board of Directors of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS), the Office of Studies and Research in Traditional Medicine and Medical History was established, and Dr. Alireza Salehi was appointed as its director. In addition, the Strategic Planning Council of Traditional Medicine and Medical History of the University was founded under the directorship of Dr. Mohammad Hadi Imaniyeh. The Council aimed to enhance academic activities in Traditional Persian Medicine in the light of its rich heritage, introduce prominent Iranian physicians and scientists and examine the suggestions of Traditional Persian Medicine with regard to the research procedures that lead to scientific evidence.

The Office of Studies and Research in Traditional Medicine and Medical History was renamed Research Center for Traditional Medicine and History of Medicine, as approved by the University’s Board of Directors in the summer of 2009. To this day the Center has continued its activity as an officially recognized research center of SUMS. Dr. Imaniyeh is currently the head of Traditional Medicine Research Center. In an order issued by the University Chancellor in 2015, Dr. Salehi and Dr. Mehdi Pasalar were respectively appointed as the Deputy Director and Manager of the Centre.

The Research Center for Traditional Medicine and History of Medicine, along with the Department of Traditional Medicine, works towards the expansion of SUMS activities in the field of Traditional Persian Medicine. It is hoped that these activities will build upon the capabilities of Iran’s national health system and ultimately serve the Iranian society.
